Introduction​

We are officially transitioning to an MIT licensing model. This move removes commercial licensing restrictions and opens the framework entirely to the community, ensuring unrestricted access, modification, and deployment by anyone.

This decision is not just about licensing—it represents a fundamental shift in our approach to fairness, accessibility, and safety. Alongside this change, we have also significantly updated our safety strategy, emphasizing distributed oversight, economic adaptation, and global collaboration to mitigate risks in the widespread use of AGI technology.

Why We Chose the MIT License​

Previously, the AGI Framework was structured under a dual licensing model, with an AGPL-3 Community License and a Commercial License for enterprise use. While this model was designed to balance open access with sustainability, it became increasingly clear that it wasn't the best fit for the long-term mission of this project.

Key Reasons for the Shift​

  1. True Open-Source Accessibility – The MIT License removes all restrictions on modification and redistribution, ensuring that AGI remains a public good, accessible to all individuals and organizations.
  2. Eliminating Barriers to Innovation – A fully open model allows more developers, researchers, and organizations to build upon and improve the AGI Framework without legal constraints.
  3. Enhancing Collaboration – Companies, institutions, and independent researchers can now integrate the framework into their projects without licensing concerns.
  4. Preventing AGI Monopoly – By ensuring universal access, we prevent the concentration of AGI capabilities into the hands of a few corporations or governments.
  5. Aligning with Ethical Principles – Transparency and openness have always been core values of the AGI Framework. This transition strengthens our commitment to democratic AGI development.

Many AI researchers argue that open-sourcing AGI poses safety risks. We disagree. In fact, our new safety approach is based on the principle that keeping AGI proprietary is far more dangerous.

We believe that true AGI safety comes from openness, transparency, and distributed oversight, rather than from restrictive access.

Our Updated Safety Strategy​

Our approach to safety operates on two levels:

1. Technical Safety​

The AGI Framework includes built-in safeguards, such as:

  • Intent Verification – Ensures that system outputs align with user intentions and ethical principles.
  • Execution Safety – Real-time monitoring and sandbox environments prevent unintended consequences.
  • Privacy Protection – On-device processing and encrypted communication maintain user security.
  • Operational Oversight – Developers can monitor AGI interactions and intervene when needed.

2. Societal Safety​

Beyond technical safety, we recognize that AGI will fundamentally reshape society, and we are committed to helping drive positive economic adaptation.

Instead of relying on corporate gatekeeping, our MIT-licensed AGI Framework fosters an open environment, ensuring that AGI development:

  • Prevents monopolization – Open AGI access prevents any single entity from controlling AI's economic benefits.
  • Encourages global collaboration – Researchers and developers worldwide can build transparent and community-driven safety protocols.
  • Forces economic adaptation – Societies must prepare for a future where AGI automates labor. Our Universal Basic Employment Tax (UBET) proposal is a roadmap for this transition.

Restricting AGI access only increases the risk of bad actors gaining control. By making AGI open-source under MIT, we ensure shared responsibility, transparency, and global participation in its development.
